Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya which is also simply known as Ayutthaya is one of Thailand's central provinces. Ayutthaya neighbors other provinces such as Saraburi, Nakhon Pathom, Lop Buri, Nonthaburi and Ang Thong. Ayutthaya got its name from Ayodhya in the epic of Ramayana.
Occupying a total land area of 2,556 square kilometers, Ayutthaya was at one time Thailand's famous capital. This much loved tourist attraction was founded by the well known King U-Thong in 1350. Since 1350 it remained the capital of Thailand for a period of 417 years in which 33 different kings ruled. The kingdom which was then ruled by various dynasties is today commonly referred to as Ayutthaya kingdom or Ayutthaya period. Due to the national significance of this province and its role in history, in December 1991 UNESCO took steps to name Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya a World Heritage Site.
